Best Air Purifiers, Pollution Masks for Delhi’s Pollution

I blog about Delhi’s toxic pollution levels every year. But this year I’m doing something different. I’m going to list down for my recommendations for air purifiers, anti-pollution masks, car air purifiers, and air quality monitors. Everything you need to survive the horrific levels of pollution in Delhi.

I’m delighted to finally see awareness hitting a tipping point. Everyone I know of is talking about the pollution levels in Delhi, wearing pollution masks, and buying air purifiers. It’s a bittersweet feeling. After all these years, I’m glad people are realizing the damaging effects of air pollution.

This post is my personal survival kit for Delhi’s pollution. Air purifiers, masks, that I’ve personally used to survive Delhi’s pollution for my past two winter trips.

Best Air Purifiers for Delhi’s Pollution

My favourite air purifier is the Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 2. It’s sleek, powerful, and extremely intelligent. It’s also tremendous value for money.

The Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 2 comes with an inbuilt air quality monitor that monitors PM 2.5 count in real time. It connects to your smart phone, via the Mi Home app, and can be controlled from anywhere.

Coming home in the next 15 minutes? Start the purifier from your phone and come home to pure air. It also has an intelligent Auto mode that adjusts the fan speed based on the air quality level.

I personally use (and love) the Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 2 in Hong Kong and Delhi to beat the pollution. Seriously, it’s the best air purifier for your money.

My second recommendation is the Philips 1000 and Philips 2000 series. Both are extremely capable air purifiers. Just pick one that suits your need (size of room) and budget.

Best Anti-Pollution Masks for Delhi’s Pollution

During winters, I never step out of my house without an anti-pollution mask ever in Delhi. The pollution levels are so toxic that using anything but a N99 pollution mask is futile.

Last year I used the 3M 9332 N99 Pollution Mask Aura in Delhi. One thing that you have to take precaution of while wearing pollution masks is the fit. If the mask is not a snug fit, air can enter from the sides thereby defeating the purpose of wearing a mask. I found that the 3M 9332 N99 Pollution Mask Aura had an amazing fit – snug against my nose and chin.

Another highly recommended anti-pollution mask is the Honeywell PM 2.5 Anti Pollution Foldable Face Mask with Easy Exhalation Valve

I haven’t personally tried it myself but it does come with good reviews on Amazon.

The AIR+ Smart Mask N99 Pollution Mask is probably the smartest looking N99 mask on Amazon in my opinion. It’s also economical. I’d say it’s definitely worth checking out.

Also, keep in mind that pollution masks should be replaced every 7-10 days. I’m not a big fan of masks that need to be washed. If none of these masks suit your needs, check out some other options on Amazon. Again, don’t buy anything less than a N99. And buy a pack of masks so that you can replace them often.

Air Purifiers For Cars

If you think air purifiers for your home were essential, think about your car. Every time you get in and out of your car, there’s ample pollution that enters along with you. And then you continue to drive and breath that polluted air in that compact space.

Yes, you definitely need an air purifier for your car. Given the amount of time Delhiites spend on the road, an air purifier for your car is probably more as important as one for your home!

The one that I can recommend is the Honeywell Move Pure Car Air Purifier. I haven’t tested it personally but I can recommend it based on its reviews.

The more economical air purifier is the Philips GoPure Compact 110 Air Purifier for Car. It also has good reviews.

Air Quality Monitors

My friends, and family in Delhi have gotten so used to seeing grey skies in the city that they think this is “normal”. From my experience, pollution is terrible in Delhi all year round. During my last trip in September, PM 2.5 levels were in the mid 150s. That’s still very unhealthy!

In order to see these invisible PM 2.5 particulates you need a laser air quality monitor. It’s not a necessity, but it will definitely help you put air quality into perspective, especially when you think it’s “not that bad”. During the winter, pollution levels in Delhi break records. But air pollution levels are still very high through the year. And the best way to know this is through an air quality monitor.

I would personally recommend the AirBliss – Pro High Accuracy Air Quality. Monitor.

Or if you’re looking for something more generic, check out this one.

Yes, air quality monitors are expensive because they use sophisticated technology to measure air pollutants. It’s not essential, but I personally never come to Delhi without my air quality monitor.

FYI, if you buy the Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 2, it comes with an inbuilt PM 2.5 monitor. The real time measurement can be seen on your smart phone.

Fight The Pollution In Delhi!

Well done Delhi, are you proud now?

So there you have it. The best air purifiers for your home and car, and anti-pollution masks for Delhi’s sickening pollution. I know this sounds like you have to spend a lot of money, but it’s for your own health, and well being. And personally, for me the price that I pay for air purifiers and pollution masks is nothing compared to what I would pay for damage caused by the pollution. This is a real long term investment in your health.

Every year there are reports about the harmful effects of pollution. Just last month a report stated that exposure to polluted air, water and soil caused nine million premature deaths in 2015 – 3 times more than AIDS, TB and malaria combined .

I’m finally happy to see more awareness build up in Delhi this year about the pollution. Let’s keep that momentum going!
